One of my bestest friends is a huge football fan and is due any day now.  She and her husband decided not to find out the sex of their soon to be bundle-of-joy, making coming up with a theme for a diaper cake more difficult.  I decided to do football because regardless of the sex, I know they will be a huge football fan like their mama and papa - if it's a girl we'll just add a few bows :)

Her shower was a few weeks ago and this is what I came up with.

Thankful Thursday - FOOTBALL!!!!

So for those of you who do not know me, I am a HUGE football fan - particularly the Denver Broncos (stop laughing), but a football fan in general as well.  I have played fantasy football for the past 5 years and won 1st place in all years except last year (mumble).  This year, I plan to bring it back!

I am ever-so-thankful that the players and owners were able to work out their ridiculous disagreements so that us fans could enjoy another football season which starts TONIGHT!

Tonight I am rooting for Green Bay - not just because Aaron Rodgers is my starting QB in fantasy, but also because I've liked Rodgers since he took over that position - or maybe I just hated Farve so much that it seems like I like Rodgers.  Shrug.  Either way, GO GREEN BAY!!!!!

Wednesday's What's Up With That!?

Remember growing up as a child and watching football with your Dad? My favorite part was always the celebration dances.  I lived for them.  I even selected my favorite football players based on their celebration dances when I was a child.  (Note - in case you were curious my favorite player growing up was the 49ers Merton Hanks - safety - who had the coolest interception dance ever!  He was later traded to the Seahawks and I lost all interest, lol).   

Now, however, a 15 yard penalty on the ensuing kickoff will be imposed for "excessive celebrations".  What's up with that!? This is nothing new, as this was put into effect in late 2009, but I'm still upset.  What is "excessive"?  That seems a little subjective don't you think? Furthermore, what is the purpose of taking this relatively harmless yet widely entertaining action out of football games? Who was it harming? Now what will a little girl look forward to while watching football with her Daddy?

A friend of mine recently brought up a fabulous idea, and I'm going to throw it out there in my blog today.  What if after a play or touchdown you had a specified amount of time to celebrate - let's say 15 seconds.  Anything over the 15 seconds would be subject to the aforementioned penalty.  At the end of the year the NFL players and/or fans would vote on their favorite dances of the season and the winner would be announced as part of the pre-superbowl or pro-bowl festivites. 

Now wouldn't that be more fun?!

What do you mean the Denver Broncos aren't playing?

My husband and I enjoyed a fun-filled time watching the Superbowl at a friends house yesterday.  We came decked out in.... our BRONCOS gear!

I know, I know, they didn't play.  Whatever. 

We were pleased that the Green Bay Packers won, even though I had predicted the Steelers would win.  I am pretty sure we were the only people at the party we attended who were cheering for the Green Bay Packers. 

We didn't win any of the pools we entered, but that is a-okay.  Better luck next year when the Broncos play right!?

One of my favorite parts about the Superbowl is always the food.  My friend makes a fabulous Italian type dip with all sorts of ingredients I couldn't even begin to list them.  Another guest brought my other fave - the 7 layer Mexican dip. YUM!

I'm going to miss football.  I really will.  Sundays (and Monday nights) just won't be the same.

Superbowl Prediction

It's my most favorite time of year - Superbowl time!! It could only be better if my beloved Denver Broncos were one of the teams playing, sadly they aren't, but I do enjoy and watch the Superbowl each year religiously nonetheless. 

I'm not really a Packers or Steelers fan.  I have nothing against either team, but they just aren't in my top 5.  Packers may have a slight advantage in my book as I did have Aaron Rodgers as my Fantasy Football QB last year (not this year - thanks Kim - hmph) and ended up winning 1st place. 

After much research and reading, I have determined that I will go with the Steelers.  Don't get me wrong, I will be rooting for Green Bay just to make it fun as I'm fairly certain most of the people I am celebrating with are rooting for the Steelers, but my actual prediction is Steelers. 

How did I come to this realization you ask? Well, because EA Sports told me so.  Every year EA Sports uses Madden to conduct a simulation of the game.  You're probably thinking that's a really lame way to pick who is going to win Elizabeth..... well, what if you heard that the Madden game has predicted correctly 6 of the last 7 winners? Not only that, but they have been close in scores on several occasions including the Steelers victories in 2006 and 2009.  Still don't believe me? Tim and I will be spending the Superbowl at a friends house in Lake Elsinore.  I'm hoping there are games, I love games.  I did get in on a game through work, but the numbers I ended up with are 7 (Steelers) and 5 (Packers).  5 is a pretty difficult number to get.  Here's hoping for a weird safety or two though! It was $10 a square so over the coarse of the game it's $1000 payout which ain't too shabby.  Fingers crossed!

Note - a 5 has has been the last number in the final score of a Superbowl competitor only 4 times since 1967.  Hmph.

Wednesday's What's Up With That!?

Okay. I'll admit it. I'm a Denver Broncos fan. Sigh.
I'm a little frustrated with some of decisions that have been made thus far.  I know there are throngs of these types of blogs or articles circulating around the internet of upset and unhappiness, but I too want to add mine. 

So let me tell it like this - if your team posted the second WORST record in the NFL this season (yes we get the 2nd overall draft pick blah blah blah who cares), WHY would you hire the ONLY coach in the NFL with a WORSE record that yours (aka John Fox)!? WHY!? What's up with that!?

I didn't necessarily think that firing McDaniels was necessary either.  I don't think it was him.  If anyone should have been fired it should have been the Defensive Coordinator.  I have never been so embarrassed as a Broncos fan as that mortifying loss to the Raiders this season..... AT HOME! The UPS delivery guy for our office building (a huge Raiders fanatic who I constantly talk smack to) came in and hugged me and did some sort of jig.  He didn't even have a delivery!

Our defense has been horrendous.  Simply horrendous.  There is really no other word to describe it.  Yes, the Defensive Coordinator falls under the head coach, but I still think the Defensive Coordinator should have been fired over McDaniels..... and then to replace McDaniels with Studesville!? Seriously? At that time I believe we were ranked 4th or so in passing but 30th (out of 32 for those of you not as into football as I) in rushing.  So why would you pick the running back coach to be interim head coach? Because he was doing such a stellar job? Clearly no. 

Ugh. I believe there were many picks far superior to John Fox for the head coaching position of the Denver Broncos.  However, I'm not in charge, I just get to whine about it in my "Wednesday's What's Up With That!?". 

Let's hope/pray/think good thoughts/etc. that next year's (the 2011-2012) season isn't as embarrassing as the past few seasons have been and that we can actually put up a winning record. 

Nevertheless, I will remain a true Broncos fan.  I will continue to root for them each and every week.  I now, however, have my outlet for my increasing frustration thanks to my new blog (yay).

ps: I'm still super irritated they traded Tony Scheffler to the Lions last year - he was my fave (insert grumpy face here)!
